Popular Exotic Pets

There are many people who enjoy being different, unusual or unique. One way to accomplish this is to own items that set them apart from the crowd. In terms of pet ownership, this means going for exotic pets. Here are some of the more popular choices.

Hybrid Cats. Instead of trying to own wild and very dangerous cats like lions and tigers, why not just a crossbreed of a wild cat and a domestic cat? Breeders of hybrid cats are trying to achieve the best of both worlds. They want the exotic looks of the wild cats and put them on a mild mannered house cat. It remains to be seen how successful these breeders will be.

Pythons. All pythons are not venomous. They are among the least aggressive snakes. These qualities present them as good candidates for exotic pets. There are around 20 or so different species of pythons and some can grow to as long as 10 metres. The Ball Python from Africa which grows up to about 1.5 metres or less is a popular choice. For those who prefer a larger snake, the Burmese Python from Southeast Asia can reach lengths of over 4 metres. Pythons which are even larger are better suited to remain at the zoo.

Fennec Foxes. The fennec fox just weighs up to 1.5 kg and is considered the smallest fox. It is also the only fox species that can be kept as pets. These foxes are identified by their pointy faces and distinctive oversized ears. Fennecs are sociable and playful creatures that are extremely active and have a very high level of energy. It could prove very difficult to maintain a pet with such speed and agility. Fennecs can jump a distance four times its own body length.

Lizards. Again, there is a great degree of variety of lizards. Among the most common reptile pet is the Bearded Dragon from Australia. This particular lizard is very suitable for as a pet because of its striking appearance and can normally be handled or touched. Another popular choice is the Green Iguana which comes from South America. An interesting characteristic of the green iguana is its three eyelids. Aside from the regular upper and lower lids, it has an extra lower lid that is transparent.

Monkeys. Primates are very intelligent creatures that communicate by sound, hand or body motions and even facial expressions. Monkeys and chimpanzees have long been popularized by circus shows and also by TV and movies. However, there also have been numerous reports on “pet” monkeys attacking humans, sometimes for no apparent reason.

Owners of exotic pets should be ready for the big responsibility of caring for these unique animals. Exotic pets will usually require specialized care and handling and the owners should be willing to learn all they can and put the knowledge into practice.
