Popular Exotic Pets

Friday, June 6th, 2008

There are many people who enjoy being different, unusual or unique. One way to accomplish this is to own items that set them apart from the crowd. In terms of pet ownership, this means going for exotic pets. Here are some of the more popular choices.

Hybrid Cats. Instead of trying to own wild and very dangerous cats like lions and tigers, why not just a crossbreed of a wild cat and a domestic cat? Breeders of hybrid cats are trying to achieve the best of both worlds. They want the exotic looks of the wild cats and put them on a mild mannered house cat. It remains to be seen how successful these breeders will be.

Pythons. All pythons are not venomous. They are among the least aggressive snakes. These qualities present them as good candidates for exotic pets. There are around 20 or so different species of pythons and some can grow to as long as 10 metres. The Ball Python from Africa which grows up to about 1.5 metres or less is a popular choice. For those who prefer a larger snake, the Burmese Python from Southeast Asia can reach lengths of over 4 metres. Pythons which are even larger are better suited to remain at the zoo.

Fennec Foxes. The fennec fox just weighs up to 1.5 kg and is considered the smallest fox. It is also the only fox species that can be kept as pets. These foxes are identified by their pointy faces and distinctive oversized ears. Fennecs are sociable and playful creatures that are extremely active and have a very high level of energy. It could prove very difficult to maintain a pet with such speed and agility. Fennecs can jump a distance four times its own body length.

Lizards. Again, there is a great degree of variety of lizards. Among the most common reptile pet is the Bearded Dragon from Australia. This particular lizard is very suitable for as a pet because of its striking appearance and can normally be handled or touched. Another popular choice is the Green Iguana which comes from South America. An interesting characteristic of the green iguana is its three eyelids. Aside from the regular upper and lower lids, it has an extra lower lid that is transparent.

Monkeys. Primates are very intelligent creatures that communicate by sound, hand or body motions and even facial expressions. Monkeys and chimpanzees have long been popularized by circus shows and also by TV and movies. However, there also have been numerous reports on “pet” monkeys attacking humans, sometimes for no apparent reason.

Owners of exotic pets should be ready for the big responsibility of caring for these unique animals. Exotic pets will usually require specialized care and handling and the owners should be willing to learn all they can and put the knowledge into practice.

Car Maintenance by Using Air

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Get more out of your car by using simple principles of “air management”.   Following these simple tips can get your vehicle brimming with life and lasting longer.  Not to mention the amount you can save from optimal fuel performance and minimizing trips to the repair shop.

  1. Get the right air in your tires.  Purchase a good tire guage and a portable air pump for home use.  Check your vehicle’s manual for the proper tire pressure and check it at least once a day.  Properly inflated tires make the car handle better, making it much safer.  Proper inflation also makes your tires last longer so that you don’t have to replace your tires that often.  Properly inflated tires can also save you at the gas pump for as much as 22.6 miles to the gallon.  All this talk about inflation, don’t over do it.  It also dangerous to over-inflate your tires, it could lead to blow-outs.
  2. Change your air filter regularly. The air filter is a piece of thick corrugated paper with a rubber ring around it.  It absorbs all the dust and dirt from driving around. All that dirt eventually keeps your engine from getting enough clean air to optimize it’s burn and thus straining your car.   It’s like throwing away your household trash.  It is recommended to change your air filter every six months.  Keep a couple handy so that you don’t have to drive to an auto store to get them.  It’s very easy to change the air filter on many cars. Two screws or a couple of clips, five minutes, and it’s replaced.

So given these airy tip, get your car lasting longer.  Remember you and your car have a bond, you take care of her and you can go places.

Maintaining Your Home and Be Stress Free

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Home is where the heart is, and one thing that most people neglect is that how you take care of your home is essential to how your life can be come enjoyable.  One thing that is always certain is that home is eventually where you will be sleeping, whether it be a mansion in the countryside or a modest studio.  Maintaining your home is a key factor in keeping your life stress free.

Keep your home clean. Nothing provides more stress than going back to a pig sty.  This doesn’t also mean that you need to drench your home with isopropyl alcohol on a daily basis.  What you need is to balance keeping your abode from becoming a garbage dump.  Some people I know clean twice a day, and that may be too much for some.  Like me.  I have my home cleaned at least once a week and that is enough to make my house feel like a home.

Don’t delay minor repairs.  It starts out as a little ding her and a little hole there, but the more you procrastinate eventually your home will be in such a shambles that you’d be force to tear it down and build a new one.  And you can imagine you wallet aching there. It doesn’t have to be like that.  Fixing minor damages prevent bigger damages to occur and on will save you more in the long run.  Not to mention it keeps you from noticing that eyesore and constantly reminding your self, oh yeah, I need to fix that.  Life has too many stimuli bugging you already, pick up that toolkit and fix it.

Keep the bugs out.  The perennial bane of the home and you don’t want these critters sharing your home with you. They start off as just a scouting part looking for scraps.  Soon they’ll bring in a battalion of critters to much on your crumbs.  Then after establishing that they can get a free meal, they establish a colony right inside your walls.  Clean up after you eat.  Don’t leave dirty dishes on the sink.  Don’t give them a reason to establish residence in your abode.  Invest on vacuum containers to keep them from whiffing your food supply.

Pay Utilities on time.  Nothing gives more stress than not having heat in the middle of your shower.  Not to mention bumping yourself in the dark and breaking things.  It is simple, but paying your utilities helps you focus on more important tasks.  Paying house bills are just too mundane and becomes quite a hassle if you forget.  Consider utilizing an automatic payment scheme so you don’t have to remind yourself every so often.

Entertain visitors.  What would be home if you don’t get to flaunt it.  Invite a friend over for coffee or tea and relax and share your wonderful home with another.

Such are simple tips but works wonders to the soul.  It is sad that with the simplicity of it all, not everyone put in that little effort.  You just feel sad that you find some houses in decay and feel the spirit and the house and the owner deteriorate overtime.

Before Buying A Used Car

Monday, April 21st, 2008

A very important first step is to decide what to buy. You can start by determining your budget and listing down what you are looking for in an automobile. How much space do you need? Is fuel economy important to you? Do you like driving around in a prestigious brand? Remember to differentiate your needs and wants. If you don’t consider all the factors carefully, you might start out thinking about a three-door hatchback and end up driving home in a large 4×4 SUV.

Where should you buy a used car? That will depend on how much effort you are willing to give. Generally, you can expect to find better prices if you work hard for it. The least hassle will be from dealers. Franchised dealers will have the newer cars and the highest prices. Independent dealers will probably have slightly older models and will give you more room to haggle. Car supermarkets usually have a lot of stock but it will mostly be mainstream models. Now if you’ve really done your homework and know exactly what you want, buying from an auction might get you the best deal. Lastly, buying privately should technically give you the lowest prices but this is where you have to be the most careful and most well informed

When is the best time to go shopping for a used car? Typically summer weather would be ideal to allow you to get a good look at used cars. New number plate registrations come out in March and September so this is the time when people trade-in their old cars to buy a new one. Therefore, mid-March or mid-September can bring out some good bargains and last until the next month or so. Dealers might also be giving out better offers towards the end of each month in order to boost their monthly sales figure.

The less reliable the used car source, the more careful you have to be in checking the paperwork. The V5 Vehicle Registration should be current and accurate. Service history booklet should be there. If you encounter a dealer or seller who isn’t very helpful in providing you with these documents, walk away. If any of the documents are doubtful, walk away.

And finally, you have to check the car. Nice and shiny might just be too nice and shiny. Inspect the bodywork to see if there are dents, scratches or rust. Look for signs of repair including under the boot and bonnet. Go inside to look and even smell the interior. Make sure the seats and carpet are dry and have no stains which might indicate a leak. Check all the controls, displays and switches. Test drive the car so you can listen to the engine and for other noises.
